Uganda clears all 60 Ebola contacts: Kenya's first imported case leaves no trace en route

Key Highlights

  • Uganda has closed the transit leg of Kenya's first imported Ebola case after all 60 contacts finished three weeks of follow-up without falling ill.
  • Officials rebuilt the traveller's route through the country, tracing border staff, hotel workers and transport operators who dealt with the patient before infection surfaced.
  • Uganda reports no active cases and will work with Kenya and the DRC, warning that infected Congolese using unverified channels must pay for treatment.

Uganda has discharged all 60 people linked to Kenya's first imported Ebola case, closing the transit leg of the Kenyan case.

Uganda clears all 60 Ebola contacts: Kenya's first imported case leaves no trace en route

The finding matters for the Northern Corridor, the road and rail route that carries Kenyan goods and passengers through Uganda to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Health Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi told a press briefing on Sunday 25 October that every contact had completed 21 days of follow-up, and that none tested positive or developed symptoms, according to the Ministry of Health in Uganda.

How Uganda traced the contacts

Kenya confirmed its first imported Ebola case on 3 October. The patient had travelled from the DRC through Uganda before the infection was reported from the DRC, which pushed Ugandan officials to reconstruct the traveller's movements after the fact.

The ministry listed, identified and monitored 60 contacts. They included staff at entry and exit points, hotel workers and transport operators who had dealt with the traveller. Dr Baryomunsi said all had "completed their 21-day follow-up period and have been discharged."

Uganda says it now has no active Ebola cases.

What Kampala says it will do next

Dr Baryomunsi pledged to work with the governments of Kenya and the DRC to suppress the virus. He also warned that DRC citizens who enter Uganda through unverified channels and are found to have the disease will be treated at their own cost.

The warning signals that border screening will stay tight even as the Kenyan transit chain closes. Mwenendo earlier reported on how Northern Corridor traffic carries cargo and long-distance passengers through the region, which is why any disruption at crossings quickly reaches traders and hauliers.

A wider regional picture

The all-clear comes as the region watches other cases. Nigeria confirmed its first Ebola case in more than a decade on 20 October in Abuja, linked to a Nigerian diplomat who had reportedly travelled from Uganda. Uganda and Nigeria disagree over the source of that infection, citing conflicting travel accounts.

Ebola is spread through contact with the body fluids of infected people, which is why a 21-day follow-up window is standard for contacts.
