PRIVACY POLICY

How Mwenendo handles your information

Last updated: 4 October 2026

Mwenendo is an independent Kenya and Africa business news publication at mwenendo.news. This policy explains what information we collect when you read our journalism, sign up for alerts or use Mwenendo inside ChatGPT, and how we use it. We collect as little as we need, and we do not sell reader data.

1. Information we collect on the website

  • Reading activity: which pages are viewed and when, used to count readers and rank our most-read stories. This is recorded without your name or email.
  • Technical data: browser type, device type, approximate region and referring page, which our hosting and analytics services process to deliver and measure the site.
  • Email address: only if you subscribe to breaking alerts.
  • Notification token: only if you allow push notifications on your device.
  • Staff accounts: sign-in details for Mwenendo editors. Readers do not need an account.

2. Cookies and local storage

We use privacy-friendly analytics to count visits. Your browser also stores small preferences on your device, for example whether you dismissed the Install App banner. Our hosting provider may set a security cookie to protect the site from automated abuse. We do not currently run third-party advertising or advertising trackers on Mwenendo.

3. Mwenendo in ChatGPT (public news connector)

Mwenendo offers a read-only connector at https://mwenendo.news/mcp-public that lets ChatGPT and similar assistants fetch our published stories and Data Focus cards.

  • The connector does not require sign-in and does not ask for your name, email or any personal details.
  • It receives only the search request the assistant sends, such as a keyword, category or article link.
  • Mwenendo does not receive or store your full ChatGPT conversation or prompts. We do not use connector requests to build profiles.
  • Our servers may keep standard technical logs (time, requested tool and network address) for a short time for security, rate limiting and troubleshooting.
  • The connector can only read published journalism. It cannot create, change or delete anything.
  • Your use of ChatGPT itself is governed by OpenAI's own privacy policy.

4. How we use information

  • To publish and deliver our journalism.
  • To understand which stories readers find useful and plan coverage.
  • To send alerts and notifications you asked for.
  • To keep the site and connector secure and working.

5. Third-party services

We rely on trusted providers to run the site: website hosting and security, our database and storage provider, a notification service for push alerts, a market price ticker widget, and social platforms where we share our stories. Embedded widgets such as the market ticker are loaded from their provider and are subject to that provider's own policy.

6. Data retention

Alert subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove them. Reading statistics are kept in aggregate to inform coverage. Technical logs are kept only as long as needed for security and troubleshooting.

7. Your rights

Depending on where you live, including under Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019, you may ask to access, correct or delete personal information we hold about you, or object to how we use it. You can unsubscribe from alerts at any time and turn off notifications in your browser or device settings.

8. Children

Mwenendo is a general business publication and is not directed at children under 13.

9. Changes to this policy

We will update this page when our practices change and revise the date at the top.
