Kenya has confirmed an eighth Bundibugyo Ebola case, a 49-year-old patient attendant who is believed to have been exposed to the first patient, the man who travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo and died in Nairobi on 5 October.
The case is the first since the national total reached seven on Saturday, and it shows the virus is still reaching people who handled the first patient's care in the days before he died. As Mwenendo earlier reported, three health workers were among four new infections confirmed on 17 October.
What the Ministry of Health has said
Director-General for Health Patrick Amoth said one of 38 people tested on Sunday was positive. The patient is not a health worker. He worked as an attendant who cleaned utensils and linen, and he developed fever, headache and muscle pain, with symptoms starting on Saturday.
A Ministry of Health source said he was placed in quarantine after symptoms began and was then tested. Officials have not published the number of contacts linked to him. The ministry has so far kept Kenya open, and Mwenendo earlier reported that the government had set no restrictions on travel, trade or public gatherings while stepping up airport screening.
A widening regional outbreak
The Bundibugyo strain has no licensed vaccine or specific treatment. The DRC has recorded at least 9,400 cases and more than 4,500 deaths since the outbreak began in May, making it the deadliest in the country's history. The DRC said on Sunday that the virus had reached its eighth province, North Ubangi.
North Kivu plans a one-week ban from Monday on people entering from Ituri, along with limits on passengers in vehicles and a suspension of large gatherings, according to the state news agency ACP. Uganda has recorded 20 confirmed cases, 15 of them imported from the DRC, and two deaths, after being declared Ebola-free in August.
What to watch in Kenya
Each new infection in a person linked to the first patient tests whether quarantine and contact tracing are holding. The World Health Organization publishes guidance on the disease for governments and travellers. Tourism, aviation and regional trade depend on the ministry's next update on contacts, since Kenya has avoided restrictions so far, and the Ministry of Health has not said whether that stance will change.
