Second Ebola Death: Kenya Loses 65-Year-Old Relative of First Patient as Seven Remain in Isolation

Key Highlights

  • Kenya has recorded its second Ebola death, a 65-year-old woman who fell ill while already in quarantine as a close contact.
  • Seven patients remain in two isolation units, and the Ministry of Health says every case still sits within one cluster of known contacts.
  • Nigeria now says its own case is closely related to Kenya's first patient, widening the regional stakes for travel and trade.

Kenya has recorded its second Ebola death after a 65-year-old woman, the country's third confirmed case of Bundibugyo virus disease, died early on Friday evening while receiving supportive care at an infectious disease unit, the Ministry of Health said in a statement from Director General of Health Patrick Amoth.

Second Ebola Death: Kenya Loses 65-Year-Old Relative of First Patient as Seven Remain in Isolation

The death takes Kenya's toll to two among nine confirmed cases, with the remaining seven patients under treatment in two isolation facilities. It comes a day after the ministry described treated patients as stable, and as Nigeria says its own case is linked to Kenya's first patient, which puts Kenya's containment record under regional scrutiny for travel, tourism and trade.

A close contact who fell ill in quarantine

The woman was a close family member and direct contact of Kenya's first patient. She was already in quarantine when symptoms began on 13 October and was admitted to an infectious disease unit the same day, Capital FM reported citing the ministry.

When Mwenendo reported her diagnosis, she had been in quarantine since 2 October, as Kenya confirmed a third case with no curbs on trade or travel. Trained teams will carry out her burial under public health protocols, in consultation with the family.

The first patient, a Kenyan who lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo, travelled by road to Kampala and flew to Nairobi on 3 October. He died on 5 October, according to the World Health Organization.

One cluster, says the ministry

The ministry says all nine confirmed cases belong to a single cluster of known contacts and that there is no evidence of community transmission. Kenyan authorities have traced 135 contacts and placed them in quarantine, Al Jazeera reported.

Four of the nine patients were infected while caring for the first patient, including three health workers and a patient attendant, a pattern Mwenendo examined in its opinion piece on protection for frontline workers. The only dedicated outside Ebola funding Mwenendo has traced so far is about KSh 129M ($1M) from China.

The ministry urged the public to avoid contact with the blood and body fluids of sick people, not to handle the bodies of people who die of suspected illness, and to wash hands regularly. Anyone with fever, weakness, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea or unexplained bleeding should seek care at once or call the 719 hotline.

Nigeria link widens the regional stakes

Nigeria became the fourth African country to report a case on 20 October. Its health minister, Muhammad Ali Pate, said on 23 October that analysis showed the Nigerian case was closely related to Kenya's index case, Al Jazeera reported.

Uganda, declared Ebola free in August, said on 23 October that travellers with a history of travel to Congo may not transit through the country. Congo declared its outbreak in May and has reported more than 9,000 cases and more than 4,600 deaths.

Tourism and the 42-day clock

Kenya is already handling a US Level 3 travel advisory, which the government says is a caution rather than a ban. The WHO has advised against travel or trade restrictions on Kenya based on current information.

A country is declared free of Ebola only 42 days after the last confirmed patient tests negative twice or is buried. With seven patients still in isolation, that countdown has not started, so Ebola will stay attached to Kenya's name in tourism and investor briefings for at least six more weeks, even if no further cases appear.
