Cameroon's Sonara Signs Fuel Supply Deal With Dangote Group and MRS Oil and Gas

Key Highlights

  • Cameroon's state refiner has signed a fuel supply agreement with Aliko Dangote's group and Lagos-based MRS Oil and Gas, announced on Friday.
  • The deal was signed in Lagos on 22 October, yet volumes, prices and contract length have not been disclosed.
  • It adds Cameroon to the markets where Dangote's business is widening its reach beyond Nigeria, including a stake in Kenya's pipeline.

Cameroon's state refiner Sonara has signed a deal with Dangote Group and Lagos-based MRS Oil and Gas to supply refined petroleum products to Cameroon, the company announced on Friday 30 October.

Cameroon's Sonara Signs Fuel Supply Deal With Dangote Group and MRS Oil and Gas

The agreement matters because Cameroon has depended entirely on imported refined fuel since 2019, and the buyers' price risk has grown as fuel costs rise amid conflict in the Middle East. No volumes or financial terms have been disclosed, so the commercial value of the deal is not yet known.

What was agreed

Sonara said the agreement was signed on 22 October in Lagos and is meant to provide a stable and sustainable fuel supply, according to Reuters reporting on the announcement. It names Dangote Group, headed by Aliko Dangote, and MRS Oil and Gas Company as suppliers.

A ceremony to launch the partnership formally has been postponed because of scheduling constraints involving Mr Dangote. Sonara said a new date would be announced later. The company has not given volumes, pricing, contract duration or payment terms, and Mwenendo has not seen any of those details in a primary document.

Why Cameroon needs imports

Cameroon has had no working domestic refinery since an explosion damaged its only plant in 2019. Since then the country has bought finished fuel abroad, which exposes its pump prices and public finances to global price swings and shipping costs.

A supplier based in West Africa offers a shorter route than cargoes from distant refiners. Whether that translates into lower prices depends on terms nobody has published, including how the products are priced against international benchmarks and who carries delivery risk.

Dangote's widening African footprint

For Kenyan readers the deal fits a pattern. Mr Dangote has been extending his business across the continent, and Kenya is part of it. As Mwenendo earlier reported, Dangote bought almost a quarter of Kenya Pipeline Company, a KSh 42.5B ($327.4M) stake that stopped just short of the 25% line at which takeover rules require an offer to all shareholders.

Mwenendo also reported that KPC shares jumped after the stake was disclosed. The Cameroon agreement concerns supply rather than ownership, but it points the same way: a refiner with large capacity looking for customers and infrastructure across African markets, details of which can be checked on the Dangote Group website.

Three details that will show the deal's weight

The first is whether Sonara or the suppliers publish volumes and pricing. The second is the rescheduled launch ceremony, which should set out the start of deliveries. The third is whether other African importers look to the same supplier for cargoes.

Until those details emerge, the agreement is best read as a signed intention to supply, with no public evidence yet of what it will cost Cameroon or earn the suppliers.
