Smaller Tokens: New Kenya Power Homes Spend KSh 818.68 a Month

New Kenya Power customers are buying less power than the last batch.

Business Daily reported that homes and shops connected in the year to June 2026 spent an average of KSh 818.68 a month, down from KSh 1,061.76. The new token has slipped under KSh 1,000.

People Daily put the connections at 411,710, taking the base to about 10.4 million. The new cohort used 161.7 gigawatt hours, down from 202.98. Revenue from them fell from KSh 5.12 billion to KSh 4.05 billion. That is about KSh 820 a month per new customer, against about KSh 1,062 the year before.

The grid grew. The token did not

The whole company did not shrink. People Daily said sales rose 12.05 per cent to 12,777 gigawatt hours, revenue was KSh 238.24 billion, and profit after tax was KSh 24.99 billion. Kenya Power's profit rebound is the company story. The new metre is a light bulb and a phone charge, not a cooker.

Connecting a house counts as access. It does not count as demand until the household can afford more than KSh 820 a month. For a reader who just got a metre, this is not a tariff cut. It is the bill the neighbours in the same band are already paying.
