Cheapest Call Centres: Kenya Beats the Philippines on English-Speaking Outsourcing CostsCheapest Call Centres: Kenya Beats the Philippines on English-Speaking Outsourcing Costs
Key Highlights
- Kenya's English-speaking call centre agents cost about KSh 1,169 ($9) an hour on average, the lowest among 18 countries in a new global index.
- That undercuts the Philippines by nearly 25%, and Kenya also scored 593 against 569 for the Philippines in the index's English proficiency assessment.
- Only about 30% of the hourly rate goes to agent pay, and the East African time zone may limit full-day support for American clients.
Kenya is the cheapest place in the world to buy English-speaking call centre services, with an average hourly rate of about KSh 1,169 ($9) per agent.
That price advantage matters because developed economies are moving customer support and back-office work to lower-cost markets to manage wages and operating costs, and Kenya is now ranked first among 18 countries on cost.
How Kenya compares
The finding comes from the rethinkCX 2026 BPO Cost Index, which covers 18 countries. Kenya's average rate is nearly 25% below the Philippines, where the same service costs about KSh 1,559 ($12) an hour.
Egypt matches the Philippines at KSh 1,559 ($12), while India and South Africa each sit at about KSh 1,689 ($13). The United States is far above all of them at about KSh 4,549 ($35). Within Kenya, an outsourced agent costs between KSh 910 ($7) and KSh 1,559 ($12) an hour once operating expenses are included.
Cost is not the only measure on which Kenya scores well. The index gave Kenya 593 in its English proficiency assessment, ahead of 569 for the Philippines. Separately, Kenya ranked 19th of 123 countries in the 2025 EF English Proficiency Index.
Where the money goes
The hourly rate is not what the agent takes home. About 30% goes to agent compensation, and about 40% covers employee benefits, team leaders and quality assurance. The remaining 30% pays for technology, office facilities, operating costs and profit margins.
That split shows how little of each client payment reaches the employee directly, and it means gains for the sector depend on more than a low headline rate.
What limits the opportunity
Kenya's outsourcing sector is smaller and less established than those of India and the Philippines. Growth depends on building a larger skilled workforce, improving digital infrastructure and keeping service reliable.
The East African time zone suits European business hours and overlaps with part of the American working day. Businesses that need uninterrupted support across the full United States day may find the gap a constraint. Kenya is best suited to English-language customer service, administrative support and digital back-office work.
Government efforts to promote digital jobs and position Kenya as a technology and outsourcing destination could help. The country also has a young, digitally connected population that supplies a growing workforce.
As Mwenendo earlier reported, Kenya's economy grew 5.1% in the second quarter, with information and communication among the faster-growing sectors. Mwenendo earlier reported on how county industrial parks face a delivery test, a reminder that cost advantages only become jobs when infrastructure is delivered.
