Sidama Bank joins Ethiopia exchange as seventh listed company

Sidama Bank has become the seventh company listed on the Ethiopia Securities Exchange, adding another financial institution to one of Africa's newest public markets. The Kenyan Wall Street reported the listing on September 28, while the exchange's own listed-company register confirms that Ethiopia is steadily building a public-equity market that now includes banks and a telecoms company.

The listing gives investors another quoted financial institution to follow and adds depth to an exchange that began building its Main Market roster in 2025. For Ethiopia's businesses, a broader listed market also creates another route for ownership, capital raising and price discovery as the country's capital-market system develops.

A growing exchange

The Ethiopia Securities Exchange's current register lists Bank of Abyssinia, Abay Bank, Ethio Telecom and Awash Bank among the companies that joined the exchange in 2026, alongside Gadaa Bank and Wegagen Bank, which were listed earlier.

The register shows that financial services account for most of the exchange's listed companies, with Ethio Telecom providing a major non-bank listing. Sidama Bank therefore strengthens an emerging pattern in which banks are among the first businesses to use Ethiopia's public market.

The Kenyan Wall Street described Sidama Bank as the seventh listed company and the fifth new Main Market listing. Its admission under the symbol SIDAX gives investors another publicly traded bank to compare with the institutions already on the exchange.

A young bank enters the public market

Sidama Bank was relicensed as a commercial bank in 2022 after evolving from the Sidama Microfinance Institution. The National Bank of Ethiopia's current list of banks confirms Sidama Bank as a licensed commercial bank, with its registered headquarters in Hawassa.

The bank says it is focused on providing financial services to both rural and urban customers and has positioned technology as an important part of its business model.

The Ethiopian Capital Market Authority had also registered 1,447,002 existing Sidama Bank shares in July 2026, according to an update shared by the bank. That registration provided the securities with a formal place within Ethiopia's developing capital-market framework.

The bank's recent operating history gives investors more information to assess alongside the listing. Secondary reporting on its 2024/25 financial year put total assets at Birr 5.51 billion, up from Birr 2.61 billion a year earlier, while deposits rose to Birr 3.674 billion.

What the listing means for investors

A new listing does not automatically mean that a company's shares will trade actively. Investors need sufficient buyers and sellers, transparent financial reporting and reliable market information for a listed security to develop meaningful liquidity.

That is particularly important for a young exchange. More listings can widen the range of businesses available to investors, but sustained market activity will depend on whether investors can trade those shares efficiently and whether companies continue meeting disclosure and governance expectations.

For Sidama Bank, becoming a listed company also puts its financial performance under greater public attention. Investors will be able to compare its results, strategy and valuation with other listed banks as the exchange develops.

For Ethiopia, the bigger significance is the gradual creation of a domestic public market where companies can be valued and ownership can change hands through an organised exchange.

The Ethiopia Securities Exchange still has a relatively small listed universe compared with established African markets such as Johannesburg, Nairobi and Lagos. Each additional credible listing therefore matters because it broadens the range of companies that can participate in the country's formal capital market.

Sidama Bank's entry is another step in that process, but the next test will be whether new listings translate into deeper trading, wider investor participation and more companies choosing the exchange as they grow.
