Shares Fall Again: NSE All Share Index Closes at 238.10, Down 4.52 PointsShares Fall Again: NSE All Share Index Closes at 238.10, Down 4.52 Points
Key Highlights
- The Nairobi Securities Exchange All Share Index closed at 238.10 on 14 October, extending the slide that began a day earlier.
- Across the two sessions the index lost about 2.94%, which would cost a KSh 100,000 ($771) market-wide portfolio roughly KSh 2,940 ($22.66).
- At this level the index sits about 6.75% below its 52-week high but still almost 40% above its low.
Kenyan shares fell for a second straight session on 14 October, with the Nairobi Securities Exchange All Share Index closing at 238.10.
The NSE market statistics show the index 4.52 points below the previous session. The All Share Index tracks every listed company, so it works as a quick gauge of how the whole market is doing.
By Mwenendo's calculation the day's fall is about 1.86%. A portfolio mirroring the market, with KSh 100,000 ($771) invested, would have lost about KSh 1,860 ($14.34) before dividends and fees.
Two falls in a row
The slide began on 13 October. As Mwenendo earlier reported, the All Share Index closed 1.10% lower at 242.62, down from 245.32.
From 245.32 to 238.10 is a drop of 7.22 points, or about 2.94%, over two sessions. On the same KSh 100,000 ($771), that is roughly KSh 2,940 ($22.66).
The exchange data do not say why prices fell on the day, and two sessions are too few to call a trend.
How far from the highs
The earlier report put the 52-week high at 255.34 and the low at 170.34. Against those marks, 238.10 sits about 6.75% below the high and about 39.78% above the low.
So the market has given back some ground but remains far above where it stood a year ago at its lowest point.
Foreign selling in the background
The fall follows a weak week. In an earlier report by Mwenendo, foreign investors net sold KSh 737M of shares in the week to 9 October, pulling the index down 1.00% to 244.93.
That report also noted the index was still up 31.30% for the year, which means long-term holders remain well ahead even after the recent dip.
The next trading sessions will show whether the index steadies near 238 or keeps sliding towards the 230s.
