- The notice covers Level 2, 3 and 4 facilities and tells them to prepare invoices, claims records and proof of services.
- The authority did not state how much remains unpaid or how long the exercise will run.
Hospitals owed KSh 10M ($77,000) or more by the defunct National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) will face verification teams from Monday, after the Social Health Authority (SHA) said it is restarting its review of pending claims.
The restart matters because verification is the step that decides whether a legacy claim is paid, leaving cash-strapped facilities waiting on the outcome.
What the notice says
In a Resumption of Surveillance Notice dated 25 October 2026, SHA said surveillance and verification of pending claims from the defunct NHIF will resume on 26 October 2026. The exercise covers claims of KSh 10M ($77,000) and above.
The notice is addressed to Level 2, 3 and 4 health facilities and is signed by SHA chief executive Dr Mercy Mwangangi. Queries go to the authority's director of benefits and claims.
What hospitals must prepare
Facilities are told to check their assigned visit dates on the SHA website. They must also assemble claims records, invoices, proof of services delivered and other supporting documents before verification teams arrive.
Hospitals that cannot produce evidence for a claim risk seeing it delayed or rejected, so records kept since the NHIF era are likely to decide how quickly facilities are paid.
What is not yet clear
The notice does not give the total value of the pending claims, how much has already been paid, or how long the exercise will run. It also does not say when payments will follow verification.
Those gaps leave hospitals unable to plan cash flow. As Mwenendo earlier reported, the Machakos housing pledges showed how announced sums can differ from what is budgeted.
Mwenendo also earlier reported on how counties received KSh 71.09B ($547M) in extra allocations, money that shapes the health services counties can fund while legacy claims remain unpaid.
The cost of delay
Delayed legacy payments squeeze suppliers, staff wages and drug stocks at facilities that now also serve SHA patients. A transparent schedule of visits and payments would let hospitals and their lenders plan around the exercise.
