Safaricom M-Pesa Jumbe: Shops Can Now Share Payment Alerts With Up To 50 Staff

Key Highlights

  • Safaricom has introduced M-Pesa Jumbe, which lets Lipa na M-Pesa and Pochi la Biashara merchants nominate up to 50 staff to receive limited payment alerts for each sale.
  • Customers appear to staff only as a JumbeID, such as NK_74, built from their initials and the last two phone digits, so names, numbers and balances stay hidden.
  • Nominated staff must accept an invitation before alerts begin, and the account owner still receives the full M-Pesa message, while the Jumbe alert leaves out the balance and PIN.

Safaricom has introduced M-Pesa Jumbe, a payment alert that lets shops, restaurants and petrol stations confirm a sale without showing the customer's full name, phone number or M-Pesa balance to staff.

Safaricom M-Pesa Jumbe: Shops Can Now Share Payment Alerts With Up To 50 Staff

The change matters because many Kenyan merchants still ask customers to flash a payment message at the till, which exposes personal details to cashiers and bystanders. Under the feature, Lipa na M-Pesa and Pochi la Biashara merchants can nominate up to 50 recipients to receive limited alerts, so an owner no longer has to hand over a personal phone to check payments.

What staff and customers see

According to Safaricom's published FAQ, each payment triggers three messages: a full M-Pesa notice to the merchant, a limited Jumbe alert to nominated staff, and a Jumbe receipt to the customer.

The customer's name and number are replaced by a JumbeID, an alias built from their initials and the last two digits of their phone number. Safaricom's example turns Nancy Kamau, with a number ending in 74, into NK_74. The Jumbe message carries the reference number, amount, business name, Till number, date and time, but not the balance.

Two customers can occasionally share a JumbeID, so the transaction reference remains the unique identifier in such cases, the FAQ says.

How merchants switch it on

Only the account's primary administrator can enable the service for a shortcode, and the merchant must accept the terms for each shortcode before first use. It is live on the *234# USSD menu and the M-Pesa Business Hub, with the M-Pesa Business App to follow.

Nominated recipients must be personal, active Safaricom numbers registered on M-Pesa; Till, Paybill and non-Safaricom numbers are not allowed. Each recipient must consent first, by dialling the code in the nomination message and entering an acceptance code, and alerts start only after that step. Access excludes the owner's balance, PIN, statement and transaction history.

What it does not settle

The FAQ describes opt-out and pause controls for nominated staff, but it does not describe a way for customers to decline the Jumbe receipt. A JumbeID is also not fully anonymous, since it is built from the customer's own initials and phone digits.

Safaricom's published terms do not say how the feature will be used against payment fraud, and the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner has not commented in the material reviewed by Mwenendo.

Why it matters for payments

M-Pesa sits at the centre of Kenyan retail payments. As Mwenendo earlier reported, mobile-money cash movements rose again in August as registered accounts grew, which shows how much everyday trade now runs through these alerts.

Mwenendo also covered how mobile money is becoming a bigger finance business for operators across the continent, and privacy features of this kind are part of how those platforms compete for merchants.

For small shops, the practical gain is simpler: the owner can delegate payment checks to staff without sharing balance details, while customers keep more of their financial information private at the counter.
