Quickmart Lands UK Backer: MOBILIST Subscribes KSh 1.94B as IFC Pledge Awaits Board

Key Highlights

  • The UK government's MOBILIST programme has subscribed KSh 1.94B ($15M), adding a second large named buyer to the KSh 15B Quickmart share sale.
  • The International Finance Corporation has pledged a matching amount, but that commitment still depends on approval by its own board of directors.
  • The offer closes on 30 October, and trading on the Nairobi Securities Exchange is expected to begin on 12 November 2026.

The UK government's MOBILIST programme has subscribed KSh 1.94B ($15M) to the Quickmart share offer, adding a second large named buyer to the sale a little over a week before the book closes.

Quickmart Lands UK Backer: MOBILIST Subscribes KSh 1.94B as IFC Pledge Awaits Board

The subscription is about 13% of the KSh 15B ($115.6M) offer, according to the offer documents, and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) has separately made a conditional cornerstone commitment of up to $15M, also about KSh 1.94B. Together the two would take roughly a quarter of the shares on sale, which matters for an offer that lapses unless applications cover at least 1.5 billion shares.

What the anchor buyers have committed

Quickmart said MOBILIST, the UK government's public-markets programme, has subscribed for shares in the offer, which is run by selling shareholder Sokoni Retail Kenya Limited. Group chief executive Peter Kang'iri said Quickmart welcomed MOBILIST "as an investment partner as we broaden QuickMart's ownership." MOBILIST partnered with the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) in 2024.

The IFC position is weaker. Its commitment is conditional on approval by the IFC board, so it is not yet a firm subscription. Mwenendo could not find a published IFC approval, and the figure should be treated as a pledge until one appears. Allotment will follow the offer terms, so the final size of each holding is not yet fixed.

Mwenendo earlier reported on how Quickmart's share sale rules work, including the minimum take-up condition and the refund timetable.

Who gets the money

The offer is for 2 billion existing shares, half of the issued capital, at KSh 7.50 each. Quickmart is issuing no new shares, so none of the cash goes to the company. As Mwenendo earlier reported, the founders are selling half of a chain that runs 72 stores in 16 counties and recorded revenue of KSh 50.4B ($388.8M) in 2025.

For retail investors the practical point is demand. Large buyers committed before the book closes reduce the risk that the minimum is missed, but they also take shares from the pool that ordinary applicants compete for.

Dates to note

The offer closes at 5pm East Africa Time on 30 October 2026. Trading on the NSE is expected to start on 12 November 2026, subject to the offer conditions and any change to the timetable.

Further coverage of the sale, including related-party costs disclosed before the offer, is on Mwenendo.
