Equity Owners Ride the Same Rally That Lifted Mwangi Past $100 Million

Key Highlights

  • A holder of Equity Group stock, including James Mwangi's 127.8 million shares, was marked at KSh 106 on Monday.
  • That close puts his parcel at about $104.6 million (KSh 13.55 billion) on paper.
  • Anyone else on the register, from a pension fund to a retail investor, was repriced by the same tick.
Equity Owners Ride the Same Rally That Lifted Mwangi Past $100 Million

James Mwangi's 127,809,180 shares in Equity Group Holdings Plc were marked at KSh 106 at Monday's Nairobi close. That print values the parcel at about $104.6 million (KSh 13.55 billion). The same tick marked every other Equity share on the register, including the units sitting in pension funds and Saccos.

Company disclosures put the chief executive's holding at about 3.39 per cent. The share count has not jumped this year. The price has. On 21 September Equity closed at KSh 102.75, which put the same parcel at about $101.4 million (KSh 13.13 billion). That was the first session the listed stake cleared $100 million. At the start of 2026 the stock was near KSh 66.75, and the same holding was worth about $64.2 million (KSh 8.53 billion).

Monday's EQTY close is public market data. Anyone can repeat the multiplication.

The money that actually arrived

Paper value is not a withdrawal. Shares can be pledged, taxed or marked down in a single session. Mwenendo is not stating a net worth.

The cash paid on this holding in 2026 is the 2025 dividend of KSh 5.75 a share, approved with a group payout of KSh 21.7 billion. On 127,809,180 shares that is about KSh 735 million before tax. Equity's 2025 results put group profit after tax at KSh 75.5 billion.

The half-year investor briefing put profit after tax at KSh 45.5 billion for the six months to June 2026, up 32 per cent, with assets at KSh 2.16 trillion.

What a unit-holder actually gained

If a pension scheme or a retail investor held Equity through the same nine months, that book rose by more than half in shilling terms, in line with the stock. The gain is unrealised until the shares are sold. The cost of being wrong is the same mechanism in reverse.

That is the reader stake. The $100 million line is a convenient marker for one large holder. The daily close is what reprices ordinary savings in the same stock. It is also the market in which Quickmart is preparing a public offer and where Nairobi's bond market sets the price of government debt.

The figure will move again

Nothing locks the dollar tag. A few shillings off the close, or a weaker exchange rate, takes the holding back under $100 million. Mwangi has run the group since 2004. That is a matter of public record. It does not freeze the share price.

The verified facts are narrow and checkable: 127,809,180 shares, KSh 106 on 28 September 2026, KSh 13.55 billion on that print.

In Summary

How many Equity shares does James Mwangi hold?
Equity Group disclosures put the holding at 127,809,180 shares, about 3.39 per cent of the company.
What was the holding worth at Monday's close?
At KSh 106 on 28 September 2026, the parcel was worth about KSh 13.55 billion, or about $104.6 million. That is a market price, not cash withdrawn.
What does the same close mean for other Equity holders?
Every share on the register, including pension and Sacco holdings, was marked at the same KSh 106. A rise that lifts the chief executive's paper wealth also lifts ordinary unit-holders. A fall would cut both.
