Key Highlights

  • Kenya Reinsurance Corporation earned KSh 2.25B ($17.32M) in the six months to June, up from KSh 1.58B ($12.16M) a year earlier.

Kenya Reinsurance Corporation has lifted its half-year profit by 42.8% to KSh 2.25B ($17.32M), as its core business of covering risks for other insurers turned sharply more profitable.

Kenya Re Profit Jumps 42.8% to KSh 2.25B as Underwriting Recovers

The figures cover the six months to 30 June 2026 and matter to anyone who holds the company's shares or buys insurance in Kenya. A reinsurer takes on part of the risk that ordinary insurers write, so its results show how well the wider market is handling claims.

The company reported profit after tax of KSh 2.25B ($17.32M), against KSh 1.58B ($12.16M) in the same period of 2025, as Kenya Re published its results and The Star reported in August. Total insurance revenue rose 14.4% to KSh 9.44B ($72.65M) from KSh 8.26B ($63.57M).

Underwriting turns the corner

The biggest shift came in the insurance service result, which measures what the company earns from underwriting after paying claims and costs. It rose 342% to KSh 1.3B ($10.0M) from KSh 320M ($2.46M) in June 2025. In plain terms, premiums covered claims and running costs by a much wider margin than a year earlier.

Group Managing Director Dr Hillary Wachinga credited "the quality of our underwriting portfolio, the strength of our regional operations" for the growth, according to The Star. Kenya Re also runs wholly owned subsidiaries in Uganda, Zambia and Côte d'Ivoire.

Costs did not stand still. Operating expenses rose 22% to KSh 800M ($6.16M) from KSh 600M ($4.62M), which the company linked to business expansion and growth initiatives.

Balance sheet grows more slowly

Total assets rose 3% to KSh 74.7B ($574.88M) from KSh 72B ($554.10M). Shareholders' funds, the value left for owners after liabilities, rose 6% to KSh 57.6B ($443.28M) from KSh 54.5B ($419.42M).

The reported figures do not include a dividend, claims total or investment income, so readers cannot yet tell how much of the profit came from underwriting and how much from investments. That split matters, because other insurers have seen the two move in opposite directions this year.

Mwenendo earlier reported on how Liberty Kenya's profit fell 46% as investment income shrank, even while its insurance service result improved. Kenya Re's results point the other way, with underwriting doing the heavy lifting.

Shares of listed firms have also been volatile lately. As Mwenendo earlier reported, foreign investors net sold KSh 737M ($5.67M) of Kenyan shares in one week, which makes steady earnings growth more notable for investors.

Dr Wachinga said the company would remain focused on "strengthening our market leadership, deepening regional diversification". Full-year results will show whether the underwriting gain holds in the second half.
