A New Scorekeeper: Africa Opens Its Own Credit Rater on Wednesday

Africa's own credit rater opens on Wednesday night in Mauritius.

The African Union media advisory puts the launch of the Africa Credit Rating Agency at the InterContinental Mauritius in Balaclava, Port Louis, from 18:00 to 21:00 on 7 October. The African Peer Review Mechanism is hosting it.

The agency is meant to rate sovereigns, lower tiers of government and companies, with more weight on local context than the three global houses give.

It is being built to run as a commercial firm, not as another grant office.

What does not change on Wednesday

Kenya's mark at Moody's, S&P and Fitch stays where it is. The coupon on the next Treasury bond does not fall because a logo was unveiled. Kenya's debt interest bill is already the household link: tax pays the interest. A new rater only matters if funds are allowed to use the score and the method is public.

African treasuries have long said global letters cost them real money. The opposite risk is a friendly score that investors ignore. Until AfCRA prints a rating, Wednesday is a ceremony, not a cheaper loan.
